Rajaghatta – Historical Significance
- Location: Rajaghatta village in Doddaballapur taluk, Bengaluru Rural district.
- Historical Importance: Ancient Buddhist settlement dating back to 4th and 5th centuries.
- Discovery: Excavations led by Krishnamurthy between 2001–2004 found:
- Remnants of a Buddhist Chaityalaya (brick structure),
- Engraved stones,
- Buddha sculptures,
- Vihara rooms, and other artefacts.
Current Revival Efforts
- Initiated by: Karnataka Tourism Minister K. Patil (on July 16).
- Authorities Involved: Department of Archaeology and Museums.
- Goal: To resume excavation and promote the site as a Buddhist heritage tourist destination.
Excavation History & Findings
- Excavated under the Mythic Society & Mysore Buddhist Charitable Organization.
- Artefacts shifted to the Museum of the Department of Archaeology in Mysore.
Future Plans
- Develop Rajaghatta into a heritage tourism site.
- Public exhibition of artefacts after excavation.
- Raise awareness about Karnataka’s Buddhist past.
