M.M. Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

Location: Chamarajanagar district, southeast Karnataka
Notified as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 2013

IN NEWS: NTCA has called for declaring the M.M. Hills Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve to provide an additional layer of protection and scale up conservation efforts.

Ecological Importance:Forms a tiger corridor connecting:
1.Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple (BRT) Tiger Reserve – Karnataka
2.Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary – Karnataka
3.Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve – Tamil Nadu

TIGER RESERVE STATUS:The proposal to upgrade MM Hills to a Tiger Reserve has been pending for nearly 15 years. If approved, Chamarajanagar will become the first district in India to host 3 tiger reserves—Bandipur, BRT, and MM Hills.
Karnataka has the second-largest tiger population in India (563 tigers) after Madhya Pradesh (785 tigers).

Project Tiger was launched in April 1973, The project was launched under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
The IUCN Red List classifies tigers as Endangered
