K.Y. VENKATESH
- Y Venkatesh is an Indian para-athlete and shot putter from Bengaluru, Karnataka , , India. He won his first gold for India in the shot put in 1999 in Australia.
- In 1994, he represented India at the 1st Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
- He was awarded India‘s fourth highest civilian award the Padma Shriin 2021.
Now he is president of Karnataka Para Athletic Association

CHILD MARRIAGE
Context:
- Karnataka ranked second in child marriage in the country.
Tamil Nadu is Highest child marriage in our country (8966) followed by Karnataka (8348),west Bengal (8324),Telangana (4440)
Child marriage act:
- India enacted the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act in 2006, establishing the legal age for marriage at 21 for men and 18 for women
- Government has introduced a bill namely ‘the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021 for raising the age of marriage of women to 21 years to make it at par with the men.
- Dhanalakshmi Scheme: It is a conditional cash transfer scheme for a girl child with insurance coverage.
Schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP), also aims to empower girls through education, health and protection, and discourage child marriage.
PROJECT DOLPHIN
Context:
- mangaluru forest and canara forest circle (uttar kannada) have submitted a revised proposal costing Rs 11.69 croce to the union ministry of Environment, forest and climate change
Highlights:
- The initiative got in-principle approval in 2019 at the first meeting of theNational Ganga Council (NGC), headed by the Prime Minister.
- Project Dolphin is one of the activities planned under Arth Ganga an ambitious inter-ministerial initiative of the government approved in 2019.
- A Special Conservation program needs to be taken up for Gangetic Dolphin which is a national aquatic animaland also indicator species for the river Ganga spread over several states.
So far, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), which implements the government’s flagship scheme Namami Gange, has been taking some initiatives for saving dolphins.
BELOWE POVERTY LINE
Context:
- There have been several attempts to cancel the BPL ration card received by the ineligible, but there has been no complete success
Highlights:
- As per the NITI Aayog 67 per cent of citizens in Karnataka should be BPL. However, 1.47 crore households having 4.67 crore people have BPL cards.
- For the implementation of Anna Bhagya and Gruha lakshmi schemes among the five guarantee schemes of the state government,
- The data of ration card holders with with the department of food and civil supplies is being used
- In 2023, 4.6 lakh BPL ration card were canceled and fine RS 13.5 cr was collected most of those are illegally were government employee
- “One Nation, One Ration Card“, introduced in 2018, is the Aadhaar based national ration card portability scheme to ensure food security for all including internal migrants within India.
Sustainable development goals
- Context:
- Karnataka is ranked 5th with 75 points ,Uttarakhand and Kerala have scored 79 points and are ranked first, TN (78) is secoud, Goa and Himachal Pradesh Sheared the third position with 77 points

- Overall SDG score for the country is 71 for 2023-24, significant improvement from 66 in 2020-21 and 57 in 2018 (Baseline report).
- Scores for States range from 57 to 79 in 2023-24, marking a substantial improvement from the year 2018 range of 42 to 69.
- Significant progress in Goals 1 (No Poverty), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land)
- Goal 13 (Climate Action) records highest increase in score from 54 in 2020-21 to 67 in 2023-24 followed by Goal 1 (No Poverty) from 60 to 72
- 32 States and UTs in the front-runner category with 10 new entrants -Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu
- Between 2018 and 2023-24, fastest moving States are Uttar Pradesh (increase in score by 25), followed by J&K (21), Uttarakhand (19), Sikkim (18), Haryana (17), Assam, Tripura and Punjab (16 each), Madhya Pradesh and Odisha (15 each)
SDG India index:
SDG India Index 2023-24, the fourth edition of the country’s principal tool for measuring national and sub national progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) was released today by NITI Aayog.
