BBMP’s Waste-to-Energy Initiative – Kannahalli Plant

Context:

  • Bengaluru generates large quantities of waste daily.
  • BBMP plans to shift towards waste-to-energy conversion.

Key Directives by BBMP Chief:

  • Person: Maheshwar Rao, BBMP Chief Commissioner
  • Plant Location: Kannahalli Waste Processing Plant
  • Directed To: Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd. (BSWML)

Major Plan:

  • Goal: Establish a waste-to-energy plant at Kannahalli.

Current Status:

  • Waste Processing at Kannahalli: ~350 tonnes/day
  • Waste Processing at Seegehalli Plant:
    • Capacity: 120 tonnes/day
    • BBMP demanded efficient processing of all waste load.

Energy Generation Plan:

  • RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel) to be sent to a power plant in Bidadi.
  • Inert waste to be transported to designated landfill.

Waste-to-Energy (WtE) – Summary

Definition:
WtE converts non-recyclable waste into usable energy like electricity, heat, or fuel.

Key Methods:

  1. Incineration – Burning waste to produce steam and electricity.
  2. Gasification – Converts waste into syngas using limited oxygen.
  3. Pyrolysis – Heats waste without oxygen to produce liquid fuel.
  4. Landfill Gas Recovery – Captures methane from landfills for energy.

Benefits:

  • Reduces landfill waste
  • Produces clean energy

Cuts greenhouse gas emissions

Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) – First Ever International Animal Export

Location & Context:
