BBMP’s Waste-to-Energy Initiative – Kannahalli Plant
Context:
- Bengaluru generates large quantities of waste daily.
- BBMP plans to shift towards waste-to-energy conversion.
Key Directives by BBMP Chief:
- Person: Maheshwar Rao, BBMP Chief Commissioner
- Plant Location: Kannahalli Waste Processing Plant
- Directed To: Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd. (BSWML)
Major Plan:
- Goal: Establish a waste-to-energy plant at Kannahalli.
Current Status:
- Waste Processing at Kannahalli: ~350 tonnes/day
- Waste Processing at Seegehalli Plant:
- Capacity: 120 tonnes/day
- BBMP demanded efficient processing of all waste load.
Energy Generation Plan:
- RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel) to be sent to a power plant in Bidadi.
- Inert waste to be transported to designated landfill.
Waste-to-Energy (WtE) – Summary
Definition:
WtE converts non-recyclable waste into usable energy like electricity, heat, or fuel.
Key Methods:
- Incineration – Burning waste to produce steam and electricity.
- Gasification – Converts waste into syngas using limited oxygen.
- Pyrolysis – Heats waste without oxygen to produce liquid fuel.
- Landfill Gas Recovery – Captures methane from landfills for energy.
Benefits:
- Reduces landfill waste
- Produces clean energy
Cuts greenhouse gas emissions
Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) – First Ever International Animal Export
Location & Context:
- Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), Bengaluru, is making history by exporting animals internationally for the first time.
- Part of an international animal exchange program with Himeji Central Park – Safari Park, Japan.
Details of the Animal Export:
From India (BBP) to Japan:
- 4 Asian Elephants:
- 1 Male: Suresh (8 years)
- 3 Females: Gowri (9), Shruthi (7), Tulsi (5)
- These elephants are part of BBP’s 26 captive elephants.
In Return, India will Receive:
- 4 Cheetahs
- 4 Jaguars
- 4 Pumas
- 3 Chimpanzees
- 8 Black-capped Capuchins
This enhances India’s biodiversity collection and supports breeding and conservation programs.
Preparation and Veterinary Process:
- The elephants were trained for 6 months to adapt to crate transport, noise, and handling.
- Certified fit for travel by expert veterinarians.
- Accompanied by:
- 2 BBP veterinarians
- 4 keepers
- 1 supervisor
- 1 biologist
Ensures safe journey and stress-free relocation.
