1. BASAVANNA : THE CULTURAL LEADER

On Thursday, the Cabinet in Karnataka made a historic decision to declare the 12th-century social reformer and founder of the Lingayat faith, Basavanna, as the cultural leader of the state. This marks the first such declaration in Karnataka, drawing parallels with Maharashtra’s recognition of Chhatrapati Shivaji as its cultural icon.

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision, noting that the demand to declare Basavanna as the state’s cultural leader had come from Lingayat pontiffs. Expressing satisfaction with the government’s response to this demand, he hoped for the blessings of all pontiffs on the decision. Siddaramaiah emphasized his personal connection with Basavanna, referring to him as his “ideological guru” and recalling that he took his oath as chief minister on Basava Jayanti in 2013 intentionally.

2. 150th ANNIVERSARY OF INDIA METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT

On January 15, 2024, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), celebrated its 150th Foundation Day, marking 150 years of dedicated service to the nation. The inaugural ceremony took place at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

3. MOBILE APPLICATION FOR MPLADS SCHEME

This initiative by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) aims to improve transparency, accessibility, and efficiency in the execution of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) Scheme-2023.

4. INDIA INNOVATION CENTRE FOR GRAPHENE

S Krishnan, the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), inaugurated two significant initiatives in Kochi, Kerala. The first is the “Centre of Excellence (COE) in Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT) Sensors,” and the second is the “India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG),” marking India’s first dedicated Graphene Centre.

5. ISRO`S DISTRESS ALERT TRANSMITTER 2G

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully developed the ‘Distress Alert Transmitter Second Generation’ (DAT-SG), designed to enable fishermen at sea to send emergency messages from their fishing boats.
