Government School Land Records Issue – Karnataka

Context:

  • 14,000 government schools in Karnataka lack land records (like khata extracts).

Objectives:

  1. Obtain land records of schools (property, land, site, buildings).
  2. Register lands in the name of respective schools.
  3. Prevent encroachment and ensure permanent legal status.
  4. Resolve disputes and enable infrastructure development.

Current Status:

  • Total govt. schools: ~48,182
    • Primary: 21,045
    • Upper Primary: 22,086
    • High Schools: 5,051
  • About 14,000 schools lack land registration.

Administrative Measures:

  • Circular issued by:
    • Commissioner of Public Instruction
    • Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of all districts

Legal Protection Goals:

  • Prevent future litigation or disputes.
  • Ensure that schools retain ownership.

Develop compound walls via MGNREGA for schools lacking them.
