Bedti-Varada river inter-linking DPR ready: Centre
IN NEWS: Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary on Monday informed Rajya Sabha that the Bedti-Varada interlinking project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) is ready with the Ministry.
About Bedti-Varada River Interlinking Project:
Envisaged in: 1992
1.Objective:
a)To transfer water from the Bedti river, known for its surplus water, to the Varada river, which faces water scarcity.
b)This is intended to provide irrigation and drinking water to arid regions in Haveri, Gadag, Koppal, and Raichur districts.
2.Proposed Dams:
a)A dam at Hirevadatti in Gadag district.
b) A dam on the Pattanahalla river at Menasagoda in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada district.

Mahadayi tribunal gets 1-year extension
IN NEWS: The Union jal shakti Ministry has extended the tenure of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal for one year with effect from August 16.
About the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT):
1.Constituted Under: Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956
2.Year of Establishment: 2010
3.Reason: To resolve the water-sharing dispute over the Mahadayi (also called Mandovi) River among the riparian states:
a)Goa
b)Karnataka
c)Maharashtra
4.Dispute Overview:Karnataka seeks to divert water from Mahadayi to the Malaprabha basin (Kalasa-Banduri Nala project) to meet drinking water needs in Hubballi-Dharwad and surrounding areas.
Goa opposed the project, citing ecological damage and reduced flow.
5. Tribunal’s 2018 final award:
a)Karnataka: ~13.42 TMC
b)Goa: ~24 TMC
c)Maharashtra: ~1.33 TMC
