Bedti-Varada river inter-linking DPR ready: Centre

IN NEWS: Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary on Monday informed Rajya Sabha that the Bedti-Varada interlinking project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) is ready with the Ministry.

About Bedti-Varada River Interlinking Project:

Envisaged in: 1992
1.Objective:
a)To transfer water from the Bedti river, known for its surplus water, to the Varada river, which faces water scarcity.

b)This is intended to provide irrigation and drinking water to arid regions in Haveri, Gadag, Koppal, and Raichur districts.
2.Proposed Dams:
a)A dam at Hirevadatti in Gadag district.
b) A dam on the Pattanahalla river at Menasagoda in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada district.

 

BEDTI RIVER
a)Origin: Western Ghats near Hubli, Karnataka
It emerges from the confluence of two streams, Shalamalahalla and Bedtihalla, which rise in the hills south and west of Dharwad.
b)Drains : into the Arabian Sea near Gokarna.
c) It’s also known as the Gangavali River in its lower reaches
d)It is a west flowing river

VARADA RIVER
a) Origin: Varadamoola, a place located in the Sagara taluk of Shimoga district, within the Western Ghats in Karnataka
b) It is a tributary of the Tungabhadra River.

Mahadayi tribunal gets 1-year extension

IN NEWS: The Union jal shakti Ministry has extended the tenure of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal for one year with effect from August 16.

About the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT):
1.
Constituted Under: Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956
2.Year of Establishment: 2010
3.Reason: To resolve the water-sharing dispute over the Mahadayi (also called Mandovi) River among the riparian states:
a)Goa
b)Karnataka
c)Maharashtra
4.Dispute Overview:Karnataka seeks to divert water from Mahadayi to the Malaprabha basin (Kalasa-Banduri Nala project) to meet drinking water needs in Hubballi-Dharwad and surrounding areas.
Goa opposed the project, citing ecological damage and reduced flow.
5. Tribunal’s 2018 final award:
a)Karnataka: ~13.42 TMC
b)Goa: ~24 TMC
c)Maharashtra: ~1.33 TMC

 

Mahadayi/ Mandovi River:
a) Origin:Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary,Western Ghats. Karnataka
Flows through:  Goa (basin cover 78%), Karnataka (18%), and Maharashtra (4%)
b) Drains : into the Arabian Sea.

c) Tributaries:  Kalasa, Banduri, Mapusa, Ragada, Nanuz, Valvoti, Nerul, St. Inez Creek, Dudhsagar, Kotrachi Nadi, and Rio de Ourém.
d) Falls: Dudhsagar Falls and Vajrapoha Falls: These prominent waterfalls are located on this river.

Malaprabha River:
a) Origin: Western Ghats, Karnataka
b) East Flowing river
c)Tributary: of Krishna , joins the Krishna at Kudalasangama
d)The river is known for the Navilatirtha Dam, also known as Renukasagara reservoir, located near Munavalli in Belgaum district.
