Karnataka to Audit Snakebite Deaths
- New Role: The state’s H1N1 death audit committee will also audit snakebite deaths, as per a recent order.
Snakebite – Now a Notifiable Disease
- In Feb 2024, Karnataka became the first Indian state to declare snakebite a notifiable disease under the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act, 2020.
- Hospitals must report all snakebite cases and deaths to the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP).
Why This Move?
- Cases jumped from 6,596 (19 deaths in 2023) to 13,235 (100 deaths in 2024).
- Around 50% cases still go unreported.
- Helps track regional trends, ensure treatment, and maintain Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) stocks.
Government Actions
- Improved ASV availability from PHCs to district hospitals.
- Introduced SOPs to give 10 vials of ASV if envenomation symptoms are clear.
Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Ordinance, 2020
- Passed on April 22, 2020, replacing old epidemic laws.
Provides legal framework for managing epidemic outbreaks in the state.

- High Security – Tamper-proof records with full access logs.
- Citizen Convenience – Online access, less need for office visits.
- E-Governance Ready – Integrates with other govt. systems for decision-making.
Verification Process
- Taluk Level: Data entered by assistants → Reviewed by Shirastedar → 5% checked by Tahsildar.
- District/AC/RC Offices: Similar multi-level checks.
Revenue Secretariat: Verified by Section Officer, Under Secretary, Deputy Secretary.
Basavanna – 12th Century Socio-Religious Reformer
Context: Basava Jayanti 2025 (30 April, Wednesday)
- Basavanna (1105–1167 CE) founded the Lingayat/Veerashaiva movement during King Bijjala II’s rule in Karnataka.
- Born in Basavana Bagewadi, he served as Mahamantri (minister) in Kalyana.
- Opposed ritualism, idol worship, and Brahminical dominance; promoted devotion to Lord Shiva (Ishtalinga).
- Advocated Kayaka (dignity of labour) and Dasoha (sharing wealth); promoted a casteless, classless society.
- Founded Anubhava Mantapa, led by Allamprabhu – seen as the first parliament of the world promoting spiritual democracy.
- Composed 1,000+ Vachanas conveying messages on equality, social justice, and inner purity.
- Opposed caste discrimination, rituals, and untouchability; emphasized honest work and equality before God.
- His philosophy influenced later Bhakti reformers and laid the base for vernacular Bhakti literature in Karnataka.
Remembered as a pioneer of social reform, equality, and spiritual humanism.
