1.Two new cardamom varieties
Context:
- Two new cardamom varieties developed at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at Appangala in Kodagu.
- The two varieties of the crop – IISR Manushree and IISR Kaveri, were among the 109 agriculture and horticulture crops released to the farming community by the Prime Minister.
- The two varieties were developed by DR SJ Ankegowda, Principal Scientist and Head of ICAR-IISR and his team at
- Cardamom was among the important revenue-generating crops for the farmers across Sakleshpur, Kodagu and Chickmagaluru in the 1980s.
About two varieties:
IISR Manushree:
- Development: Through clonal selection.
- Characteristics: Stable yielding, tolerant to moisture stress.
Yield:
- Irrigated Conditions: 550 kg dry capsules per hectare.
- Moisture Stress Conditions: 84% reduction in yield.
IISR Kaveri:
- Characteristics: Compact flowering, produces bold capsules (70% over 8 mm), tolerant to moisture stress.
Yield:
- Irrigated Conditions: 482 kg dry capsules per hectare.
- Moisture Stress Conditions: 308 kg dry capsules per hectare.
- Suitability: Ideal for cultivation in Karnataka.
Importance:
- Market Preference: IISR Kaveri’s bold capsules, which are green in color, fetch a premium price.
- Relevance: These drought-tolerant varieties are suitable for cultivation in areas with moisture stress, especially appealing to new farmers from non-traditional cardamom-growing regions.
2.Vijayanagar period copper inscription found
Context:
- A copper inscription of the time of Devappa Nayaka, a Harati-Nidugal palegara who ruled under the Vijayanagara empire, has been discovered at Agali on the border of Madhugiri taluk.
- Tumkur history researcher D.N. Yogeeshwarappa said that Sadashivayya, a villager of Agali, has preserved this inscription.
- Although it is written in Kannada script on both sides of the copper metal plate, only the language is Sanskrit and Telugu.
- It is said that this copperplate consists of 49 lines in total.

- This copper inscription, known as the Greater Jayapatrike, refers to the Vijayanagara emperor Bukkaraya (1399-1406).
- This inscription is composed of Sanskrit verses, beginning with Sarada Stuti.
- Then Telugu language is written in Kannada script.
- This copper inscription is related to Lord Shankareshwar of Agali village, Devappanayaka, a descendant of Harati-Nidugal Palegars, had donated the lake, dyke, rake, well, field, field along with the tax collected by the people of that town as a deity to Lord Shankareshwar of Agali belonging to his kingdom.
- It is mentioned that he distributed this donation to the eighteen people who were in charge of the administration of the temple.
3.Tungabhadra dam
Context:
- Tungabhadra dam gates washed away Karnataka, Andhra face flood risk

- The Tungabhadra Dam, also known as Pampa Sagar, is a water reservoir constructed across the Tungabhadra River in the Hosapete-Koppal confluence in Karnataka.
- The Tungabhadra River is formed by the confluence of the Tunga Riverand the Bhadra River at Koodli which flow down the eastern slope of the Western Ghats in the state of Karnataka.

4.Fakirappa Varavi
