1.Heavy rains push up storage in hydel reservoirs to record level

Context:

  • The recent spell of heavy rains in Karnataka’s Western Ghats region has brightened its power scenario as the cumulative storage in all three major hydel reservoirs of the State has increased to a record level of 86% as against the level of 49% during the corresponding period last year.
  • Generally, the storage in these reservoirs reaches the maximum or near the maximum by September.
  • But copious rains in the Western Ghats in the last few weeks
  • Lingananakki, Supa and Mani had a cumulative storage of 46% on August 6, 2023, as against 86.65% now.

 

Data of hydel reservoirs:

  • In fact, the last 10 years data shows the only other highest level by this corresponding period was in 2018, when the cumulative storage had touched it’s as against the previous year’s 4,298 million
  • This would mean that the State can generate an average of 88 million units of energy a day till June 30, 2024,
  • The State was in a position to generate an average of 13.06 Million Units a day
  • The break-up of storage shows that Linganamakki accounts for the highest storage of 74%, which can help generate 4.272 MU of energy, followed by
  • Supa, which has reported 85% storage that can generate 2,617 MU of ener gy.
  • The storage in the Mani reservoir is only 75%

2.Heavy rains push up storage in hydel reservoirs to record level

Context:

  • To introduce a holistic approach for focused diabetes care as part of the Outpatient Department (OPD) consultations in Karnataka, the State Health Department is all set to launch the ‘Changing Diabetes Barometer’ (CDB)

 

Changing Diabetes Barometer: (MoU)

  • Under the programme, the department will develop Community Diabetes Centers in all its facilities, including primary health centers, across the State.
  • To facilitate this, the department on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF), a non- profit organization set up by Novo Nordisk India.
  • The MoU was signed between Naveen Bhat Y., State Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM), an d Vikrant Shrotriya, NNEF Managing Trustee.

3.BWSSB Set to Launch Largest Water Treatment Plant in Asia

Context:

  • Providing Cauvery water to 110 villages along the outskirts of the city under the ambitious Cauvery V Stage project,
  • BWSSB is set to commission Asia’s largest water treatment plant at Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli), 95km from Bengaluru in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district.
  • Pumping 775 MLD of potable water to Bengaluru city under stage 5, the plant will be inaugurated either before or after Independence Day. It will have a collective pumping capacity of 2,225 MLD.

About project:

  • Already under trial run, the Rs 5,550-crore project promises to be a unique pumping station as it will pump clean water to a height of 920 metres between TK Halli and Bengaluru, spanning 95km.
  • Also, the pumps will lift the water from a pool 7-8m deep. unlike the normal pumping stations with 2-3m depth.

Ø  The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB)

Ø  chairperson Ram Prasath Manohar

Ø  Premier governmental agency responsible for sewage disposal and water supply to the Indian city of Bangalore.

Ø  It was formed in 1964.

 

4.NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY 7TH AUG

Focus:

  • The National Handloom Day Theme 2024 focuses on integrating technology and innovation in handloom weaving to expand market access and enhance skill development for artisans.

 

Contribution of Karnataka:

  • Belgaum district is situated in North West of Karnataka regions.
  • It is among the seven selected districts, which are concentrated in handloom and power loom activities presently the handloom activity is diminishing on account of diversification to power loom activity.
  • n Belgaum district there are 4546 handlooms and 13826 power looms, 5 spinning mills, 25 Ginning and Pressing units and 15 Hosiery/Knitting units.
  • Total of 48 Handloom co-operative societies are working in the district.
  • The main produce are woolen Kambles, Blankets and in cotton, Bed sheets, Towels, Dhothis etc.,
  • Other than Department, Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation is a Apex body.
  • Which looks the interest of individual weavers, by declutching them from master weavers than supply raw materials.
  • Design in puts, training etc. Items produced by weavers will be procured by paying conversion charges.
  • They have one project office at Ramdurg under which 13 sub conters are functioning.

Mysore silk: 

  • Mysore is rich for its Royal heritage and Grandeur and it is no surprise that the silk produced there reflect the traditional splendor through its rich yet delicate motifs.
